What Is Riso Print?
Think of Riso printers as a marriage between screen printing and photocopying. The texture and colour that you get from spot colour printing but with the ease of photocopying. But it doesn't stop there! You can also send digital files direct to the printer, it is a great way to take digital drawings, that may have a flat finish, and bring them to life with textured and tactile print.
How Do I Setup Files For Riso?
Riso printing uses layers. Like photoshop or screenprinting it is all about putting one colour ontop of another. There are 3 types of images that work well with Riso.
CMYK:
CMYK is the "full colour spectrum". It is how you would print a full range of colour on any kind of printer.
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (your tonal value: Black)
To achieve the closest look to this on a Riso we use: Blue, Fl Pink, Yellow and Black. Which gives a really nice sylised effect to your photographic image.
Spot Colour:
The other type of printing is with spot colour. This is using the colours we have provided to create a look you want. The limitation of colour is something to think about but can also bring its own kind of creativity. Baring this in mind, we prefer layered files to flat files! It is possible for us to seperate a flat JPEG out but we might suggest that you print in CMYK or the layered artwork might look slightly different to how you imagined it. As all processes, it is good to find/ make artwork that works well with the process rather than work against the process and try to force the artwork to fit...
